Alana Kushnir Presents Her 2022 Top Legal Issues for the Art World
Art lawyer and advisor Alana Kushnir, director and founder of Guest Work Agency, kicked off the WO Foundation’s 2022 lecture series with an online presentation on the key legal issues to face the art world this year.
A FOUNDATION SUPPORTING WOMEN IN THE ART WORLD
The WO Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation committed to providing women with the tools and knowledge for a better chance at succeeding in today’s art market. Started by four female international artists in 2020, the foundation supports its community through educational programs and representational opportunities including exhibitions, representation of work, and connecting its members with galleries.
TOP LEGAL ISSUES FOR ARTISTS IN 2022
From copyright infringement and licensing issues affecting the expanding NFT market, to the lack of clarity around crediting of collaborators on joint projects, Alana discussed some of the most pertinent legal issues which are currently arising and shared her tips on how to better equip your art practice for 2022.
BRAND COLLABORATIONS, NFTs AND CANCEL CULTURE: WHAT WE CAN EXPECT IN 2022
In her presentation, Alana covered five key legal areas for the art industry to watch out for this year:
Artist/gallery arrangements: the importance of formal agreements and the types of contracts artists should have when working with galleries
Artist/brand collaborations: what to consider when brands approach you as an artist and how these relationships can work. Alana noted these types of collaborations are on the rise.
NFTs, royalties and licensing: legal issues (for example, copyright and royalties) for NFTs that Guest Work Agency has encountered through its experience in advising art tech startups and artists in this space.
Internships and employment: the legalities to consider around work experience and employment and similar types of working relationships.
“Cancel culture” risks: the legal issues and risks that can arise when bad practices are called out in the art world.
If you are interested in attending an upcoming WO Foundation event, the organisation has a program of both English and Spanish lectures advertised on its website.
