Art Law Coffee Talk: Serpentine Legal Lab Online Discussion

Join the Center for Art Law, New York in a discussion with Serpentine Galleries R&D Platform Legal Lab about legal design and innovative collaboration.

About this Event

Why would a public gallery in London be concerned with climate emergencies and the impact of digital and new technology? Established 50 years ago, in 1970, the Serpentine Galleries in London made it their business to explore connections between art and climate change, equality and education, and the effect of new technologies and law on contemporary art.

One such initiative is the Serpentine’s R&D Legal Lab, which is testing and fostering forward-thinking legal solutions for the art field. In this discussion led by the Center for Art Law, attorneys Alana KushnirMarie Potel-Saville, and Yayoi Shionoiri will examine the notion of legal design and how the law can better support collaborations across art, science, and technology.

About the Serpenting Legal Lab

Serpentine’s Legal Lab explores how the law can better support collaborations across art, science and technology. Led by lawyer, curator and founder of Guest Work Agency, Alana Kushnir, the Legal Lab is a space for investigating legal issues and prototyping accessible legal solutions for the art field. Legal structures and tools, such as contracts, are crucial to structuring innovative enterprises and effective operational models. However, in the sphere of art, there is a tendency to shy away from legally onerous forms of arrangement. This has resulted in legal infrastructures being under-acknowledged for their multifaceted potential in supporting cutting-edge creative practice. These concerns are present in the internal organisation of the art field and the expanding realm of cross-disciplinary relationships between art actors and external fields.
